About the University of Debrecen
The University of Debrecen is the largest University in Hungary with approximately 27,000 students and more than 3000 international students from all around the world. Those who finish it successfully and graduate will get an M.D. degree. The curriculum of the medical program meets all the requirements prescribed by the European medical curriculum, outlined by the Association of Medical Schools in Europe in 1993. The degree received is accepted in all EU countries and several other countries around the world.
The courses are taught in English, however students are required to learn basic medical Hungarian for communication with patients.
The syllabuses and classes of all courses correspond to European standards. The total number of contact hours in medical education is over 5,500, which can be divided into three main parts: basic theoretical training (1st and 2nd year), pre-clinical subjects (3rd year) and clinical subjects (4th and 5th year) followed by the internship (6th year). The proportion of the theoretical and practical classes is 30% to 70%; whereas the students/instructors ratio is about 8/1.
Besides the Hungarian Accreditation Committee, education at the Medical Programs of the University of Debrecen is accredited by the World Health Organization, the U.S. Department of Education, the State Education Department (NY, USA) , the Medical Board of California, the General Medical Council of the UK (PLAB is compulsory) and the Medical Councils of Israel, Ireland, Iran and Norway. In other European countries and also in India, the diploma of the Medical School is accepted for registration purposes, however, in some countries, a qualifying exam is required.
According to Webometrics (world Universities' ranking on the web) which included 20,000 universities, the university of Debrecen is ranked 417. In September 2012, the university was ranked among the top 700 universities in the Quacquarelli Symonds newest World University Rankings list.
