Foundation Certificate
The Foundation Certificate course prepares you for a degree education in the Faculties of Engineering, Pure Science or Social Sciences, or the Law or Management Schools. Our Certificate courses are academically stimulating and will provide you with a good foundation for your undergraduate degree education.

When you successfully complete your chosen Foundation Certificate course at the level stipulated in your offer, you are guaranteed entry directly to the first year of your undergraduate degree.

Aim
The Foundation Certificate in Business, Law and Social Sciences prepares business students for an undergraduate degree in the School of Law, the School of Management or the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Sheffield. The course is academically challenging and provides integrated academic studies in business, law or social sciences, advanced level English language, and comprehensive study skills.

Entry requirements
Entry into the Foundation Certificate course requires business students to have successfully passed high school Grade 12 or equivalent. The exact entry requirements vary from country to country.

Foundation Certificate: Science and Engineering
Aim
Foundation Certificate: Science and Engineering prepares you for an undergraduate degree in the Faculties of Pure Science or Engineering at the University of Sheffield. The course provides quality learning and integrated academic studies in science and engineering, advanced level English language, and comprehensive study skills. In order to succeed, students should have studied Maths and Science in their own country at a level ABOVE the minimum requirements for at least 1 year.

The University of Sheffield’s undergraduate degrees are highly regarded as quality learning by employers across a range of industries. Guided by the latest developments in each subject, the University’s degree courses equip students with cutting-edge skills and abilities, and produce graduates who stand out in increasingly competitive job markets.

Engineering is one of The University's great strengths, and it was announced in August 2011 that an extra £21 million will be invested in its highly respected Faculty of Engineering. With 30% of UK engineering graduates coming from overseas, the Sheffield International College provides an excellent route to academic success in this field.

Sheffield International College is now offering a new course - Foundation in Science and Engineering (Maths and Science)for students who meet the overall entry for the 2 Term Foundation Certificate in Science and Engineering, but who either:
  • Have lower than average scores in Mathematics and Science, and need to strengthen their subject knowledge
  • Have been out of full time education for more than a few months and would benefit from reviewing core curriculum
  • Are concerned they may struggle to achieve good results in the shorter, two term course
  • Would like to solidify their basic Mathematics & Science knowledge before quality learning at a higher level
  • Wish to increase their chances of obtaining good results in their further studies
It is a 3 Term course where students would benefit extra from an introductory term in Maths and Science in Term 1 which leads onto the traditional 2 Term Science and Engineering Foundation Certificate.

Students wishing to take the Foundation Certificate in Science and Engineering are also subject to additional entry requirements.

Student Tutorials
All students have a Learning Support Tutor who will work with you throughout your academic course at the college, and support you in achieving your study goals. Through regular meetings, your tutor can offer valuable advice to help you develop your study skills and knowledge, ensuring you receive a quality learning experience.


Assessment
Students are assessed through a combination of assignments, periodic tests and end-of-module examinations. Full-time attendance is an important part of the assessment.


Progression
The Certificate allows you to progress to the first year of an undergraduate degree within the Faculties of Pure Science or Engineering. Your place is guaranteed when you complete the Certificate course and achieve the grades stipulated in your offer letter.


Additional Entry Requirements
When considering applications to Sheffield International College, the below should be considered for all applicants seeking a progression route within:
  • Science:
    must have both the equivalent of Maths GCSE grade C and Science GCSE grade C.
  • Engineering:
    must have the equivalent of Maths GCSE grade C

Graduate Diploma
The Graduate Diploma courses prepare you to study at postgraduate degree education in the Faculties of Engineering, Pure Science or Social Sciences, or the Law or Management Schools. Our Graduate Diploma courses are academically challenging, and build on your prior degree education and experience.

When you successfully complete your chosen Graduate Diploma course at the level stipulated in your offer, you are guaranteed entry to a related postgraduate degree education at the University of Sheffield.

Frequently Asked Questions
What modules will I study to prepare for a UK degree education?
Each course has three parts:
  • subject modules which are relevant to your chosen progression route
  • study skills modules (eg how to structure an essay, how to give a good presentation etc)
  • English language modules to improve your academic language
What do I need to do to pass the course?
To pass the course, and progress to the university, you need to achieve the required grade in the academic subjects and also pass an internal test of English at the required grade.

When will I get my timetable?
You will get your course timetable at enrollment.

How many hours of study will I do each week?
You will have approximately 20 hours of classroom contact per week. Your classes will normally take place daily from Monday to Friday. You will also be expected to undertake at least another 20 hours of private study.
In the UK, it is normal for classes to be scheduled between 9am and 7pm

What are the minimum attendance requirements?
We hope for and expect 100% attendance for our students.

How often will I meet my Learning Support Tutor?
You will meet your Learning Support Tutor (LST) every two/three weeks to discuss your progress and deal with any issues before they become problems.
If you need any extra help, your LST or teacher will be happy to see you at short notice, subject to availability.

Can I change my progression degree once I am at college?
Yes, as long as you achieve any additional entry requirements.

What if I don't get the grades I need to progress?
If you don't get the grades you need to progress to the University of Sheffield, we will help you find a place at an alternative university. Further information will be provided when you get near to the end of your course.

How much holiday will I get?
Each term has twelve weeks of teaching with four week holidays between terms. Two term students finishing in May have an extended summer break which lasts approximately 16 weeks.

Where can I get more information about library facilities?
The University of Sheffield has excellent library facilities available to our international students while they study at the university.

Can I change from a 3 term to a 2 term pathway course?
Students will not be able to change from a 3 term course to a 2 term course. However, students on a 2 term course can extend their studies to a 3 term course. In this case, students will need to discuss their cases with their Academic Advisor and the Academic Services office.
